"Lets Bhangra" --Vicki Virk chats with Michael Krasny about Bhangra and its influence on the local dance scene.
Listen to the interview. --KQED NATIONAL PUBLIC RADIO SHOW "FORUM" WITH MICHAEL KRASNY--
“Dancing Sardars are not an uncommon sight, and neither are Sardars who dance non-stop. What is unusual is that this is in San Francisco, and the party includes non-Sardars too. The only common factor-an almost overwhelming love for Bhangra. The third Saturday of every month sees Dholrhythms pumping up the music. In attendance are dancers and nondancers, all shaking a leg vigorously to Dholrhythms co-founder Vicki Virk's instructions.”
--INDIA TODAY--
“There’s sheer joy, and then there’s Non Stop Bhangra. A colourful feast for the eyes as well as the ears, people were laughing, clapping and stirring up the dust with unbridled enthusiasm.”
--SALMON ARM OBSERVER, SALMON ARM, BRITISH COLUMBIA--
“Can't quite swing the flight to Mumbai? You're in luck, because since 2004, Vicki Virk and Suman Raj of the dholrhythms dance troupe, along with DJ Jimmy Love and others, have been holding monthly NonStop Bhangra club nights that turn the Rickshaw Stop into handclapping, bangle-clanging, whirling celebrations of Bhangra”
--SCENE MAGAZINE, SF BAY GUARDIAN--
“In all the years I’d gone out clubbing in this very city, I had never once been to a show or party where everyone in the house was dancing. The energy was incredible. Literally every person in that place was either dancing or drinking water and having a breather just to go back in and dance some more. It was utterly impossible to resist being part of the jumping joyous crowd.”
--NRI ONLINE MAGAZINE--
“Non Stop Bhangra performs both Friday and Saturday night, and it isn’t just a band. It’s a whole event featuring lessons; dance performances; live music sets; and DJs spinning a mix of bhangra, hip-hop, reggae and electronica. In the Bay Area, NSB throws at least one big bhangra bash each month, garnering accolades as well as hundreds of sweaty revelers. Online magazine 7x7 listed the event as one of “250 Things to Do in San Francisco Before You Die.” Since most of you aren’t sure how long you’ll live (or when you’ll next visit San Francisco), I recommend you go get your bhangra on while you have the chance.
--WEEKLY ALIBI, ALBUQUERQUE, NEW MEXICO--
“If you can imagine mixing traditional Indian dance with some of the heavier beats to come off the dance floor, you might be close to understanding Non Stop Bhangra. The live performances, naturally, are amazing, complete with the vibe you would expect in the club but mixed with Indian dancers on stage.”
--DAILY LOBO, ALBUQUERQUE, NEW MEXICO---
“Global grooves rarely taste as good as what you will find at Non Stop Bhangra. A night unlike any other & A treat for the eyes and ears, NSB will take your body and soul to whole new realms.”
--NITEVIBE--
"Of course, you could saddle up your most comfortable heels and get your werqout in the club. Should you try this tactic, you could hardly do better than the rum-tum-tum stylings of
Non-Stop Bhangra, a night that's been teaching San Franciscans how to circle wrists and move hips in pure Punjabi mode since 2004. Calorie burn and culture learn at the same time, perfect."
–SAN FRANCISCO BAY GUARDIAN--
“Didn't those festivities in "Monsoon Wedding" seem like the best party in the world? Attending the recent "Nonstop Bhangra" at San Francisco's Rickshaw Stop felt as if you'd been invited to just such a celebration.”
--SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE--
“What’s bringing urban club kids and middle-aged Indian immigrants together onto sweaty dance floors, gleefully stomping their feet and raising their arms in unison? At the aptly named Nonstop Bhangra party at San Francisco’s Rickshaw Stop, DJs alternate classic with cutting-edge tracks, while guest musicians join in on the dhol drums and other classic Indian instruments. There, 20-something indie rockers learn traditional dance moves and play air sitar alongside die-hards from the South Bay nostalgic for home.”
--SAN FRANCISCO MAGAZINE--
“NonStop Bhangra delivers the whole Punjabi enchilada to the heart of mini-mono scensterdom, Rickshaw Stop. Professional dance performances, lessons for beginners, live painting and drumming, superduper psychedelic visuals, and the fabulous, mini-multicultural sight of people shaking their bangles in glee — what's better?”
–SAN FRANCISCO BAY GUARDIAN--
"Border-Boundless Night"; an amazing option for those looking to mix their dance with a cocktail and actually learn something in the process"
--SAN FRANCISCO WEEKLY--
"Catch the celebratory spirit of NonStop Bhangra. Originally a lively dance of Punjabi farmers celebrating the harvest, the vigorous drum-driven dance is now accented by jingling jewelery and face-swallowing smiles."
--FLAVORPILL--
“Over the course of the past three years, the monthly Non-Stop Bhangra club night has drawn to the Rickshaw Stop's dance floor hundreds of often barefoot revelers eager to lose themselves in the rum-tum-tum of the deep dhol drums, the rippling chimta claps, and the spiky electronic accouterments that make up the unique and funky, Punjabi-by-way-of-London Bhangra sound.”
--SAN FRANCISCO BAY GUARDIAN--
